Cake Smash - Your Questions Answered

When is the best time to have a Cake Smash session?

I normally do cake smash sessions around 7-14 days before the actual birthday.  This then gives me time to get the gallery edited and back to you in time for your little one's birthday.  However the session can take place at any time you wish, whether that be before, after or even on your little one's birthday.

How should I prepare for my session?

If your baby has never had cake before, it is recommended that you allow them to sample some a few days or weeks before the photoshoot to allow them to get used to the taste and texture of cake.

Make sure babies or children are well rested before the photoshoot. Try and make sure they have their usual naps and feeds.

What Do I Need to Bring?

  • The Cake – a cake with a soft topping like buttercream is best.  Avoid cakes with any toppings that may pose a choking hazard for the baby.  If baby has any allergies, please make sure you check the ingredients carefully.

  • Snacks and Drinks - bring extra feeds, snacks, milk or drinks to help keep them happy and hydrated during the session.

  • Outfits - Bring any outfits that you want to use during your session.

  • Props -  Bring any special props you may want to include in your session i.e. special teddy bears etc. This isn't essential though as I have my own props.

  • Bubble Bath – bring baby’s favourite bubble bath for the splash afterwards.

  • Towel – to get baby dry after the Splash

  • Wipes – these are great for keeping noses clean as well as cleaning baby up after the cake smash

  • Toys – bring any toys or similar items to make baby smile.

Where will the session be held?

The photoshoot will take place in my studio based in the converted garage at my home address.

I heat the studio to keep babies warm so please dress appropriately.

What will happen at the photoshoot?

  • General Photos - Firstly we will capture some general photos of baby and any family or sibling photos that you would like.  Babies can typically take around 10 minutes to get used to the surroundings so this is a good way to ease them in.

  • Cake Smash – this is where things could get messy but, in my opinion, the messier the better!!  Baby will be given time and encouraged to explore, taste and generally make a mess with the cake.

  • Splash in the Bath – babies often love this part more than cake.  Baby is encouraged to splash as much as they like to get some great photos of them in the bath.

Can siblings join in?

Yes, absolutely!!  I actively encourage siblings to join in at certain parts of the session.  Parents are also welcome to join in if they wish.  Please bring entertainment for any young siblings for when they aren’t joining in i.e. iPads, colouring etc. Also a few treats can sometimes help especially if they don't normally like having their photo taken or lose interest easily.
